Interests Several of the papers below derive from my doctoral dissertation, a historico-philosophical study of the model-theoretic account of logical consequence. "Tarski on Logical Consequence" is a historical examination of Tarski’s presentation of the account. "Logical Truth and Tarskian Logical Truth" argues that there are currently no reasons to think that the account is extensionally inadequate for classical quantificational languages. "The Problem of Logical Constants" deals with the related concept of a logical expression, and argues that the usual ideas about how to characterize it are misguided. I have also worked on a number of topics in the philosophy of language. "Quotation Revisited" criticizes several theories of quotation for being in conflict with the semantic principle (or convention) of disquotation. "Vagueness and Margin for Error Principles" argues that Williamson’s epistemicist theory of vagueness implies its own incorrectness when it is applied to the epistemic predicates appearing in its formulation. In "Rigidity and Essentiality" I defend the idea that the appropriate notion of rigidity for general terms is the notion of an essentialist predicate.
