Graduated in philosophy (BA) at the University of Lisbon (1994). MLitt (masters' degree) in philosophy at the University of St Andrews (1996). PhD in philosophy at the University of Stirling (2004), with a dissertation on bivalence and truth value gaps .
Currently, researcher of the LANCOG group of the Philosophy Centre of the University of Lisbon and also in the steering committee of the Portuguese Society for Analytic Philosophy.

Interests
My research interests are mainly in the philosophy of language and philosophical logic. Currently, I am researching two related claims. The first is that meaning determines both truth and falsity conditions, such that both can fail to be met by a given assertion. If correct, this would accommodate the idea that a given assertion can fail to be both true and false, without absurdity. The evaluation of this first claim turns partly on the study of the distinction between correctness conditions and truth-conditions. The second related claim is that, parallel to the speech act of assertion, there is a distinct speech act of denial, which permits rejecting an assertion without asserting a negated content. The evaluation of this second claim turns on studying the behaviour of embedded clauses and the possibility of performing conditional speech acts.
