Pains as Reasons

Abstract

In this paper I flesh out one important aspect of the imperativist account of pain, by canvassing an imperativist treatment of its motivational aspect -- its status as *reason-giving*, in various senses to be distinguished. David Bain (2013) has recently expressed doubts that such a treatment is possible. I will keep an eye on the kinds of examples he claims put pressure on imperativism, and will suggest ways of dealing with them along the way.
