WMS stands for World Web Service which allows the user create maps as images without the need to have the data in your computer.

The OpenGIS® Web Map Service (WMS) Implementation Specification provides three operations (GetCapabilities, GetMap, and GetFeatureInfo) in support of the creation and display of registered and superimposed map-like views of information that come simultaneously from multiple remote and heterogeneous sources. (Source: http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wms)

In particular WMS defines:

  1. How to request and provide a map as a picture or set of features (GetMap)
  2. How to get and provide information about the content of a map such as the value of a feature at a location (GetFeatureInfo)
  3. How to get and provide information about what types of maps a server can deliver (GetCapabilities)

On internet, you can find different WMS of georeferenced data, the following links are an example:

From the HERMES GIS we have an example of the Nordic Margin GIS.

If you know other WMS links which could be interesting for the HERMES community, please send us an email.
