Functions
The Hypobaria Service
is available to sportmen and women, some patients and the general public. It
offers several programmes of intermittent exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, a recently
developed test of tolerance to hypoxia and other procedures based on exposure
to low environmental pressure.
Equipment
We have a hypobaric chamber with a capacity of eight people, ancillary
scientific and medical equipment which guarantees safety throughout the procedures.
We can thus monitor the physiological responses elicited by the exposure to
hypoxia. The maximal limit for simulated altitude is set at 6,000m.
Services
We currently offer the following:
| SERVICE: | DIRECTED TO: |
| Test
of tolerance to hypoxia Measures sensitivity to hypoxia, which is related to the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). |
Anyone who has to travel or stay in locations at high altitude (over 3,500 m). |
| Programme
for pre-acclimation Shortens the period of acclimation to high altitude, thus reducing the cost of the expedition and increasing the chances of success. |
Climbing expeditions at high
altitude. (Several sessions are needed) |
| Standard
programme of intermittent exposure to hypoxia Elicits an adaptative response at hematological, respiratory and cardiovascular levels, thus increasing the aerobic work capacity. |
Sportsmen or women, patients
or anyone needing to improve their aerobic capacity or increase their blood
oxygen transport capacity. (Several sessions are needed) |
| Performance
capacity test To accurately establish the individual workload capacity. |
Anyone who wishes to evaluate their physical capacity before and after the programme of exposure to hypobaric hypoxia. |
| Complementary
analysis To monitor and control the evolution of various physiological parameters . |
Everyone desiring to quantify the variations induced by intermittent exposure to hypobaric hypoxia. |
| Technical
tests Tests any kind of device or equipment in low environmental pressure. |
Industrial processes in general, manufacturers of equipment and high mountain accesories. |
Users
The Service of Hypobaria is accesible to any person or group of persons
who have a suitable reason to request their use. Moreover, the Service is oriented
to research, and is open to colaboration with the whole scientific community,
after approval of the experimental protocols by the Unit of Hypobaria and, when
necessary, by the corresponding Ethical Committee.
Requests for using the Service
Please provide sufficient notice if you wish to use the Service. Applications
will be attended in chronological order, according to the availability of our
facilities.
