Since 1991, the Department of Economic History and Institutions at the University of Barcelona and the Department of Economics and Economic History at the Autonomous University of Barcelona have organised an Interuniversity Postgraduate Program in Economic History and Institutions . The program is designed to provide specialist training in economics and in economic history.

The program complies with the general regulations (Royal Decree 788/1998, 30 April) and with the Agreement on the Interuniversity Doctorate Program in Economic History signed by the rectors of the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona on 15 October 1999.

In past years this program has received funding from the Office for Education and Universities of the Ministry of Education and Science as well as several grants from the Generalitat, the autonomous government of Catalonia . In 2003 it received recognition as a quality postgraduate program from the Ministry of Education and Science and this qualification has been successively renewed since then. The program also received an ADQUA grant (awarded by the Department of Universities, Research and the Information Society of the Generalitat) in 2003.
