The PhD Programme in Economic History of the University of Barcelona is a Postgraduate programme adapted to the European Higher Education Area. It has two phases:

1. The teaching period of the programme is the Interuniversity Master in Economic History of the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Zaragoza. This Master's degree provides the students with information on the current debates and methods of this discipline, and gives them the necessary skills and knowledge to start working on their doctoral theses
   
2. The research period of the programme is addressed at the elaboration of the doctoral thesis, and includes complementary activities and specific teaching complements. During this period, the students will elaborate their doctoral thesis on an Economic History topic, in the context of one of the research lines of the programme and under the supervision of one of professors involved in that research line.
   

The PhD Programme in Economic History derives from the Interuniversity PhD Programme in Economic History and Institutions of the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which was established in 1991 and was awarded in 2003 the Quality Mention of the Spanish Ministry of Education, which was renewed without interruption until the extinction of the programme.

The Ministry of Education has awarded the PhD Program in History of Economic Statement to Excellence, to last until the year 2013-2014. The program received a score of 89% in the evaluation of doctoral programs conducted by ANECA to obtain the statement.
