Gateway to Knowledge boosted by recent visit

March 2007

The Diagonal Campus, located at one of the gateways to the city of Barcelona , is home to the greatest concentration of research and knowledge in Southern Europe . The site is currently being reorganised and new buildings are being constructed for the different faculties and services to help to improve the visibility and efficiency of the campus, which is to be known as the Gateway to Knowledge. The Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, joined by the Rectors of the University of Barcelona (UB), Màrius Rubiralta, and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Antoni Giró, visited the Diagonal Campus on 11 January to see first-hand the work being done. The visit highlighted the interest in the initiative and the general agreement to develop the project and promote the necessary construction work.

EdificiThe guests first paid a brief visit to the Barcelona Science Park and then moved on to the Faculties of Physics and Chemistry at the University of Barcelona, where the seventh floor offers a panoramic view of both sides of the Avinguda Diagonal and particularly the central site of the South Campus, where the future Plaça Bederrida will be located. This area will be home to various buildings that are to be shared between the two universities, as well as future UB developments for Pharmacy, Mathematics, Fine Art and the technical centre of the UB Scientific-Technical Services. There will also be a reorganisation of the disused part of the campus.

The Barcelona City Council and the universities are in complete agreement over the urban model for the area, which will include the opening of a new road parallel to the Avinguda Diagonal, the extension of the Carrer Menéndez y Pelayo as far as the Carrer Gregorio Marañón, the pedestrianisation of side streets and the development of the Carrer Martí i Franquès.

On the other side of the Avinguda Diagonal, in the North Campus, the project aims to integrate the view of the Palau de Pedralbes into the area made up by the Business School , the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law, by creating a route between the buildings.

The visitors were then taken to the Nexus and Nexus II buildings and finally to the Rectory of the UPC, where they discussed the planned development of Torre Girona and other buildings.

The visit to the future Gateway to Knowledge was also attended by the following guests: from the City Council, the First Deputy Mayor, Francesc Xavier Casas; from the UB, the General Manager of the Barcelona Science Park, Fernando Albericio, and the Director of Projects, Oriol Ripoll; and from the UPC, the President of the Social Council, Ramon Folch, and the Vice-Rector of Infrastructure Planning and Programming, Teresa Rovira.
