Dídac Ramírez has been elected rector of the University of Barcelona after obtaining 53.45% of the weighted votes in the second round of voting, held on Tuesday, 11 November. The other candidate, Josep Samitier, obtained 46.55% of the weighted vote. SEE PHOTOS
The turnout for the second round was 7,026 out of a total of 65,055 voters, or 10.8% of the electoral roll, slightly below the 11.6% recorded in the first round held on 6 November. Of the 7,026 votes, 5,991 were valid, 491 blank, and 544 invalid. In the first round, held on 6 November, 7,568 votes were cast (11.6% of the electoral roll), of which 5,799 were valid, 661 blank, and 1,108 invalid.

In the second round of voting, the turnout of the various university groups was as follows: 1,615 of the 2,327 tenured lecturers (69.4%, compared with 70.4% in the first round); 841 of the 2,834 other teaching and research staff (29.68% vs. 30%); 3,055 of the 57,615 students eligible to vote (5.3% vs. 6.2%); and 1,515 of the 2,279 administrative and services staff (66.48% vs. 67.3%).
The votes cast were distributed as follows:
Professor Ramírez obtained 53.45% of the total: 22.25% from tenured lecturers, 4.02% from other teaching and research staff, 20.28% from students and 6.90% from the administrative and services staff.
Professor Samitier obtained 46.55% of the total: 28.75% from tenured lecturers, 4.98% from other teaching and research staff, 9.72% from students and 3.1% from the administrative and services staff.
Dídac Ramírez i Sarrió (Barcelona, 1946) holds a degree in Philosophy and Education Sciences from the University of Barcelona, and Ph.D. degrees in Economics and Business and Philosophy and Education Sciences from the same university. He has been a full professor at the UB since 1990. He was vice-dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences from 1984 to 1989, and vice-rector of Economics and Administration from 1990 to 1994. He was chair of the Catalan Society of Philosophy, a branch of the Institute of Catalan Studies, from 2001 to 2006, and treasurer of Barcelona Football Club in 2003. He is currently director of the Department of Mathematics for Economics, Finance and Actuarial Sciences at the UB, and has been a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences since 2002. He is also head of the UB research group 'Research in Finance and Uncertainty Analysis’ and a member of the Teaching Innovation Group 'New Methodologies for Teaching and Learning Financial and Actuarial Mathematics'
