Dr. Sánchez obtained her PhD at our laboratory in 2002 with the Thesis entitled "Hereditary hemochromatosis: study of the HFE gene and its mutations in the Spanish population". Mayka received the 2005 Social Council Award "Antoni Caparrós" of the University of Barcelona for the best thesis work that makes a significant contribution to the transfer of knowledge to society. Subsequently she performed her Post-Doctoral training with Prof. Matthias W. Hentze, in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg, Germany. She is currently Junior Group Leader at the Cancer and Iron research laboratory in the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer (IMPPC) in Barcelona.
