One more year, the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) supports the leading research on cancer –both in basic knowledge and clinical applications for the benefit of patients.

On September 24, on the occasion of the World Cancer Research Day, the AEEC Scientific Foundation aid programs gave 171 projects accounting for about 21 million euros, ranging from innovative and disruptive ideas to projects that are funded in coordination with big European foundations.

In this innovation context, under the Idees Llavor 2019 category, -on the generation of new opportunities on innovative cancer research- AEEC will fund a project on hepatocarcinogenesis and metabolic lipotoxicity led by Professor Francesc Villarroya, from the Faculty of Biology and the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), and member of the Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition Networking Biomedical Research Centre (CIBERobn). In the section of Idees Llavor, researcher Eva González, from the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), received an aid to study new therapeutical targets against negative triple breast cancer.

Among the other funded projects are those led by Pau Sancho, researcher at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and the Biomedical Research Clinic Foundation, to study hepatoblastoma, as well as those led by Antonio Postigo, from the Clinic Foundation for Biomedical Research, and Salvador Aznar, from IRB Barcelona, among others.

In the area of Coordinated groups, lecturer Aleix Prat, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and the Clinic Foundation for Biomedical Research, also received funding for cell therapy in patients with advanced breast cancer. Last, lecturer Josep Maria Llovet, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and IDIBAPS, is one of the distinguished experts with grants in the category of Accelerator groups in research globalization.
