IBUB approaches scientific research to University students

The IBUB participates in the conferences for professional orientation and potential career development for University students held in many Faculties strongly related to Biomedicine. Scientific research, basic or applied, undertaken in the IBUB or in other research centers, is strongly encouraged for those students that are intellectually challenged by science, feel creative, and are genuinely appealed by Biomedicine topics. The talks are intended as a friendly means to approach students, provide examples and advice, as well as answer their queries about the scientific career.

First IBUB Conference on Research 2007

On 16 November, the Palau de les Heures will provide the setting for the Institute of Biomedicine's First Conference on Research. As the IBUB's first institutional event, it is intended to provide the basic tools for scientific communication and planning that the Institute will need to conduct its activities. The conference will be attended by total of 30 speakers from IBUB research groups, who will formally present their lines of research, and 100 researchers, members of the Institute. The IBUB will also present its program of activities for 2007/2008, and the closing speech will be delivered by the Rector.

Dr. Eva Estebanez Perpiña, new Ramón y Cajal researcher at the IBUB.

(25-10-2007) The IBUB announces the forthcoming incorporation of Dr. Eva Estebanez Perpiña in the Institute's activities as IBUB Ramón y Cajal researcher. Dr. Estebanez Perpiña is internationally acclaimed for her work at the Max Planck Institute and the University of California, San Francisco, and her research focuses on the study of nuclear receptor structure, and the identification of new functional domains and potential implications in the design of new drugs addressed to these receptors. Her recent work can be seen in the following publications:

  • Estebanez-Perpina E, Arnold AA, Nguyen P, Rodrigues ED, Mar E, Bateman R, Pallai P, Shokat KM, Baxter JD, Guy RK, Webb P, Fletterick RJ.
A surface on the androgen receptor that allosterically regulates coactivator binding.

Dr. Estebanez Perpiñà was selected from a shortlist of candidates at the last call by the Ramon y Cajal Program in the area of Biomedicine. The IBUB would like to take this opportunity to welcome her to the Institute and is confident that her research activity will make an invaluable contribution to its multidisciplinary activities focusing on the identification and characterisation of bioactive molecules.

The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, awarded to Mario R. Capecchi,
Sir Martin J. Evans and Oliver Smithies
"for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells"

(25-10-2007) For further information:

Mario Capecchi is interested in the molecular genetic analysis of mammalian development, with emphasis on neurogenesis, organogenesis, patterning of the vertebral column, and limb development. The IBUB, leading recipient of financial resources for biomedical research from the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs through its cooperative research network CIBER and biomedical networks in its Thematic Networks for Cooperative Research in Health

The Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) at the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs recently participated in launching a program to finance benchmark biomedical research groups through the ISCIII's cooperative research network the 'Centros de Investigación Biomédica en Red' (CIBER), and those networks specifically addressed to biomedicine within the ISCIII's Thematic Networks for Cooperative Research in Health (RETIC). After a national selection process conducted by an international body of assessors, no less than 13 of the Institute of Biomedicine's research groups have been officially admitted to the CIBER and RETIC programs, along with other UB-related biomedical research institutions, thus consolidating our University's Biomed Platfiorm as a leading national force. Congratulations!

European symposium on research in new drugs for HIV/AIDS at the Faculty of Chemistry, a first event in the spirit of the IBUB

On 11 December, the Aula Magna at the Faculty of Chemistry provided the setting for the symposium on new classes of anti-retroviral drugs organised by the European research network TRIoH ( "Targeting Replication and Integration of HIV") . This symposium testified to the IBUB's conviction that key health issues in our society are best addressed by the interaction of researchers from different fields—by the combined efforts of research personnel in Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology and other disciplines sharing their resources to meet challenges such as the development of new drug treatments to combat HIV/AIDS. The Institute also wishes to thank IBUB researcher Jaume Vilarasa for his work in organising this initiative..
