XXIII Seminar on Languages
and Education
Meeting of the thematic network "Language Learning
and Teacher Training in Multicultural and Multilingual Situations"
Language teaching in diversity and for diversity
Barcelona (Spain), 30, 31 May and 1 June 2002
With the establishment of the European Union, the
growth of immigration and the need to promote the languages of stateless
communities, we are obliged to approach the language learning of
the future from a new multilingual perspective which constitutes
a radical departure from traditional models. Increasingly, communities
in our countries are formed by speakers of different languages;
more than ever, individuals find themselves obliged to learn and
use languages other than the ones they and their families speak.
If our aim is to make Europe an internally cohesive unit, we need
to find mechanisms that allow a deeper knowledge of the languages
spoken by its inhabitants. The situation that confronts us today
cannot be approached from the conventional methodological perspectives
of maternal or first language and foreign or second languages. We
must develop innovative educational projects that take account of
Europe's linguistic diversity - and, above all, use it to good effect
- in both formal and non-formal education. From this general perspective,
the Seminar sets out to stimulate critical reflection and to offer
proposals for action that will help us to advance towards our goal:
achieving real multilingual education in the countries of Europe.
This conference will host two events whose objectives largely coincide.
On the one hand, the Languages and Education Seminar, organized
by the ICE (the Institute of Education Sciences) at the University
of Barcelona, in conjunction with the ICE at the University of Girona,
with a long tradition in studies of the planning of teaching in
bilingual and multilingual contexts, and, on the other, the meeting
of the "Language Learning and Teacher Training in Multicultural
and Multilingual Situations", thematic network which brings
together 18 research groups from 14 different universities, headed
by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. For the first time,
these groups are facing the challenge of finding common ground between
their respective projects and of making them known to teachers and
researchers in the field.
