We propose to investigate new methodological strategies of display and interpretation of art processes and its relationship to science. These methodologies would be based on observation of the working methods of scientific research, mapping such research through visualization of data to transform as art processes. We are interested in expanding the experience as researchers in the field of digital technology and to create a network of interaction between artists and scientists. We propose a space for encounter and collaboration between different research centers.
Objectives:
1. Artistic Research based on the observation of scientific methods in different laboratories in the following centers:
-Parque cientifico (PCB).
-Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNC),
-Environmental Health Clinic de NYU (EEUU, New York),
-Departament de Psiquiatria. Hospital de Sant Pau (Barcelona)
-Quality Image. Laboratoris Color EGM (Barcelona)
2. Experimentation and production of such research in different media, devices and contexts.
3. Conducting a Workshop related to the proposed research.
4. Create an international network with other research groups to share knowledge and
methodologies, understanding the network from the paradigm presented by the new digital
environment where processes are tools of communication, research and knowledge.
5. Dissemination of results and theorizing. (on-line magazine)
The main goal of this project is to develop, to confront and to transmit our studies in the field of the artistic production made with digital technologies from the perspective of the new creative methodologies.
Our most immediate objective is to make an international forum taking the format of the symposium. This activity will be a key part to discuss, debate and contrast the impact of digital media over the past ten years in the context of the computerised printed image and, in turn, to generate an exchange of experiences enabled by our research structure, boosting the expertise of contemporary art today.
Objectives:
1. To obtain a corpus of art made with digital media, containing within itself (as artworks) the outcome of the investigation.
1.1 To develop our research on the materials and technology of the new media related to the two-dimensional and three-dimensional impression.
1.2 To organise, design and programme a "Collaborative Magazine" published on-line.
2. To realise the symposium The Expanded Print: Impact of Digital Media in the Context of the Printed Image.
2.1 To analyse the innovations of the digital language applied to the printing processes.
2.2 Confluence of different disciplines.
2.3 To generate a platform of debate to invigorate our knowledge of current contemporary art.
2.4 To transmit the results obtained.
Our research group emerged in 1998 (as a pre-competitive group) out of the postgraduate course: From the Engraved Print to the Digital Print, organised by the Printmaking Section of the University of Barcelona. Its aim was to rethink the digital technologies applied to the art form.
In 2000 PROSPECCIONES BINARIAS was awarded the status of R&D Project.
The emergence of a new digital culture originates a new complex and specific language. Our aim is to analyse its elements and investigate their functions. The analysis of the medium reveals the need to redefine the traditional concepts of originality, reproduction, authorship, copyright, plagiarism and the network. The language, understood as information, is codified, provoking structural changes.
1. Obtaining a corpus of artworks created with digital media, and where the outcome of the research is retained within the work .
2. Isolation or identification of the creative mechanisms inherent to the technological medium. To research a new methodological approach on the medium and its distribution.
3. Theoretical studies on the transformation of languages generated by these means. Study of the medium through the creation with the medium itself: to incorporate the metalanguage and the error as constructive elements. The combination of diverse digital imaging reconsidering the notion of authorship.
4. Creating a platform of debate across the Web with other art institutions relating the subject of "reproduction".
We are grateful to the companies Epson and Hewlett-Packard for their collaboration with the project through the assignment of machinery to develop art projects in digital printing.
