• Helium nanobubbles have been developed from the impact of ultraviolet light laser pulses 

Helium nanodroplets are quantum systems with extraordinary properties such as superfluidity, a non-friction motion at extremely low temperatures of   0.37 K. Due to these properties and the fact that helium droplets are chemically inert and completely transparent to the Infrared and visible light, are   commonly referred to as the "ideal test glass" for examining molecules captured by spectroscopy.

Now, an international research team, in which researchers from the Institute of Nanoscience and Naotechnology of the UB (IN2UB) Manuel Barranco and Martí Pi are involved, have determined how a nanodroplet of superfluid helium reacts when directly excited by a laser pulse. The results have been   published at the journal Nature Communications (article).   

The researchers have identified three elementary relaxation steps after photoexcitation: ultra-fast electron localization, electron decay in metastable states, and the formation of an empty bubble, which eventually bursts on the surface of the nanodroplets, thus expelling a single excited helium atom.

These results help us to understand how nanoparticles interact with energy radiation, as it happens when individual nanoparticles are directly  represented,  for example at the new European XFEL facility in Hamburg that emits ultra-short X-ray flashes.

This work, led by Frank Stienkemeier at Freiburg Institute of Physics (Germany) and Marcel Mudrich at University of Aarhus (Denmark), has been carried out from observations made at the Electron laser Radiation for Multidisciplinary Investigations (FERMI) in Triestre (Italy) where the ultra-fast reaction in helium nanodroplets had been previously observed after excitation with ultraviolet radiation obtained with the free electron laser at this facility.

Giant intrinsic circular dichroism of prolinol-derived squaraine thin films

An International study, published in Nature Communications, has provided a new small molecular benchmark material for the development of organic thin film based chiroptics. Chirality is a fundamental symmetry property describing an object such as a molecule that is non-superimposable on its mirror image. Nature has evolved with single handedness meaning that essentially all biological processes are intrinsically chiral. This is well recognized for instance in pharmacological applications, but however, the enantiopure, i.e. homochiral, synthesis of drugs remains a challenge for chemists. Combination of molecular chirality and the inherently connected circular dichroism (CD) with semiconducting properties offers great potential for chiral opto-electronics. Researchers in this work, in which Oriol Arteaga from Department of Applied Physics and IN2UB, University of Barcelona participated, assessed the temperature-controlled assembly of enantiopure prolinol functionalized squaraines with opposite handedness into intrinsically circular dichroic, molecular J-aggregates in spincasted thin films (see Figure). The results presented in this work, provide a new small molecular benchmark material for the development of organic thin film based chiroptics with a uniquely high CD rooted in a large oscillator strength of the J-type excitonic optical transitions and not to mesoscopic structural ordering.

· A new study conducted on neonatal mice carried out by the Center for Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR[B]), in collaboration with the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the University of Barcelona (UB), with the participation of the research group of Dr Daniel Navajas, states that the ability of the heart to regenerate after a wound is related to the stiffness of the cellular environment, rather than to the proliferative capacity of the cardiac cells, narrowing the window of regeneration to forty-eight hours after birth. The study, published in Science Advances, paves the way for the development of therapies based on the pharmacological modification of the extracellular matrix to promote tissue regeneration after myocardial infarction. · The FBG awards €100,000 to four UB projects for the valorisation of research. The grants of the Valorization Fund will make it possible to further mature the selected technologies with the twofold aim of bringing them closer to market requirements, and of allowing their transfer either through licensing to an existing company or through the creation of a new spin-off. · An article by a team of the University of Barcelona, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), with the collaboration of Dr. Pietro Tierno (Grup de Física no lineal en nanobiofísica-Magnetic Soft Matter Group), shows the theoretical prediction and experimental observation that a mixed-order transition in a magnetic colloidal crystal, that is, a solid formed by a suspension of magnetic microparticles. (Read more)

 prediction and experimental observation that a 
 mixed-order transition in a magnetic colloidal crystal.   

· The results of a study, lead with the collaboration of Dr. Gustavo Egea, and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, show that moderate exercise reduces the progression of the aneurysm of the aorta, one of the most serious symptoms of Marfan syndrome; a rare disease of the connective tissue, but which mainly affects the cardiovascular system which can cause the breakdown of the artery. · The Jagiellonian University in Krakow awards Dr. Rubí, director of the Statistical Physics research group, with the Gold Plus Ratio Quan Vis' Gold Medal, for his outstanding achievements in the field of thermodynamics of nanoscopic systems.

· A theoretical study explains the “natural selection” of proteins. Researchers from Nanosystems Statistical Physics-Complex Matter Group, lead by Giancarlo Franzese, presented the first computational study that mimics the natural selection of proteins in water under different environmental conditions, aiming to design amino acid sequences able to express their functions at specific temperatures and pressures.  Pysical Review X.
