.......The Department of Inorganic Chemistry was established in 1966. It is the inheritor of the first Chair of Inorganic Chemistry created in the University of Barcelona in 1879. The first lecturer was Professor Eugenio Mascareñas Hernández, who introduced the Periodic Table of the Elements in Spain. Until 1973 it was part of the Faculty of Sciences, and then of the Faculty of Chemistry. In 1985, in application of the new University's rules, it was merged with the Faculty of Pharmacy's homonymous Department, establishing a single Department of Inorganic Chemistry in the University of Barcelona. .......The Department is involved in a range of undergraduate degree programs in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Geology, and Science and Technology of Food. It also offers postgraduate programs leading to the Master of Science (MSc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degrees. The MSc. programs are in "Experimental Chemistry" and in "Experimental Pharmaceutical Sciences". The Ph. D. programs offered are in "Molecular Inorganic Chemistry", "Technology of Materials" in collaboration with other Departments of the University of Barcelona, and "Homogeneous Catalysis" together with other Spanish universities. .......A dozen of active research groups are working on different fields of Inorganic Chemistry from both the experimental and theoretical points of view, such as: Coordination compounds, Organometallic compounds, Bioinorganic chemistry, Supramolecular systems, Solid state, Catalytic materials, and Reaction mechanisms. |
