Doctoral Extraordinary Award of the Faculty of Biology during the 2011-12.

The Board of Governors approved the UB awards extraordinary doctoral on date July 23, 2013. But, the winners were notified on December 2013.

 The Doctoral Extraordinary Award has been won by Dr. Mari Carmen Pineda, who defended on 25 September 2012 at the Faculty of Biology.

Largest evolutionary study of sponges sheds new light on animal evolution.
10.02.2014 Sponges or Porifera —there are over 8,000 species currently recognised— are the most basal phylum of metazoans. They represent a rich animal diversity found throughout the world, from tropical climates to the arctic poles, and they are an excellent model to study metazoan evolution.  + info

World Wetlands Day.
03.02.2014 On 2 February, celebrates the World Wetlands Day, commemorating the date when it adopted the International Convention on Wetlands. (Ramsar Convention)

The convention was developed and adopted by participating states at a meeting in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971 and entered into force on 21 December 1975. The World Wetlands Day aims to disclose the value of one of the biologically richest and most diverse ecosystems, but it also particularly fragile and vulnerable.

Catalonia has 2,977 wetlands identified and defined in the Inventory of wetlands in Catalonia.

A New Species of River Dolphin from Brazil or: How Little Do We Know Our Biodiversity .
27.01.2014 Researchers have discovered a new species of river dolphin from the Amazon.
Published in the journal Plos One, scientists led by Tomas Hrbek of Brazil's Federal University of Amazonas formally describe Inia araguaiaensis, a freshwater dolphin that inhabits the Araguaia River Basin. It is the first true river dolphin discovered since 1918.

Captured a vulture in the old cemetery of Sants.
15.01.2014 Captured a vulture on the premises of the old cemetery of the Saints (10/01/2014). The animal had been located in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat Monday and after a failed attempt to capture him yesterday rangers from the Department of Agriculture could catch the cemetery that is located next to a school.

Toni Hernandez, Researcher of  Conservation Biology Team UB and member of the Institut de Recerca de la Biodiversitat  (IRBio), participated in the capture.
