IRBio researcher Jofre Carnicer and a group of UB Biology students present at COP27

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Biodiversity Foundation and the Spanish Climate Change Office and with the collaboration of Crue (Spanish Universities), with the aim of promoting and facilitating participation of young people at international climate summits, promoted the Generación Clima COP27 initiative.

One of the winning projects was the ADAFOR project led by Jofre Carnicer, head of the Climate Change Ecolab group, researcher at the Biodiversity Research Institute of the University of Barcelona and CREAF, it aims to improve the transformative potential of options of adaptation to climate change in national adaptation programs, combining semi-quantitative methods, expert consultation, and a practical method, to evaluate the impact of climate change adaptation options in regional or national programs.

Last November 3, Jofre Carnicer and the Biology students of the UB were invited to La Moncloa by the president of the state government, Pedro Sánchez, the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz and the third vice president and minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, the visit to comment on the world summit COP27 in Egypt.

"At COP27, as we develop the project, we will learn from environmental policy experts, scientists and social actors and take advantage of the unique learning environment and research opportunity offered by the diverse delegation attending the summit,"
Jofre Carnicer says.

What is COP27?

It is the 27th Climate Summit that aims to "stabilize greenhouse gases at a level that prevents dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system". In practice, these international summits are a meeting point for the negotiation of binding agreements between states for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

This year COP27 is being held these days from November 6-18 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt to ensure the transfer of funds intended to compensate emerging countries for the climate impact. Heads of State, ministers and negotiators, climate activists, mayors, representatives of civil society and executive directors will gather there. It is the most important annual meeting on global climate action.

The aim will be to seek measures on central issues to deal with the climate emergency: the urgent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the strengthening of resilience and adaptation to the inevitable consequences of climate change and the fulfillment of climate action financing commitments in developing countries.
