Professor Manel Puigcerver, bestowed with the JanVan Haaften IUGB Award for Wildlife Management in Europe

Last 29th August, the International Union of Game Biologists (IUGB) bestowed the Jan van Haaften 2019 award to Manel Puigcerver, professor of the UB and collaborator member of the IRBio, during the closing ceremony of its biennial Conference held in Kaunas (Lithuania). The aim of this organization is to promote the knowledge of wildlife and to achieve a sustainable use of their populations together with the conservation of their habitats.

Jan Van Haaften award is an honour that IUGB bestows since 2013 to persons or institutions with an international reputation for their eminent service to applied wildlife research in Europe, contributing to the best possible management and conservation.

The basic selection criterion for the Jan van Haaften IUGB Award is the significance and impact of a research in the field of wildlife research, undertaken in Europe and having resulted in application of management and conservation “on the ground”. This work should be characterised by a sustained record of productivity in applied wildlife research over a substantial period of time, with a direct value for managing and conserving wild birds and/or mammals.

Manel Puigcerver, doctor in biological sciences, is a lecturer professor of the Department of Linguistic and Literary Education, and Teaching and Learning of Experimental Sciences and of Mathematics of the Faculty of Education and collaborator member of the IRBio. His research is focused on biology didactics and on the study of the biology and behavioural ecology of a bird species, the Common quail (Coturnix coturnix), in collaboration with Dr. José Domingo Rodríguez Teijeiro, member of the IRBio, professor of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences of the Faculty of Biology and head of the Evolutionary Ecology, Behaviour and Biodiversity Conservation consolidated research group.

In this last line of research, Dr.  Puigcerver has been steadily working during the last 36 years, going on depth in the knowledge of a species that, apart from having a mysterious biology, ecology and behaviour, is a very popular game bird in several Mediterranean countries of Europe, This work has contributed to have a better knowledge of the species, allowing to optimize its management and conservation, with the final aim of achieving a sustainable use of its populations.
