The COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) initiative, in the framework of the Horizon 2020 Programme, has published the 2020 call for COST actions. This initiative aims to provide opportunities for collaboration between researchers, engineers and academics from universities, research centres, businesses and SMEs to develop joint proposals, in all areas of science and technology, and through trans-European cooperation. It also aims to encourage the participation of young talent and leaders of the next generation, in particular by promoting work opportunities for early-stage researchers and ensuring gender balance.

Proposals have to integrate researchers from at least seven COST countries, of which a minimum number will come from the COST “Inclusiveness Target Countries” (ITC). The proposals selected will receive financial support of 134,000 euros per action, for a period of four years, depending on the budget available. The actions have to contribute to the improvement and development of scientific, technological, economic, cultural or social knowledge in Europe.

The initiative does not directly finance research in the above-mentioned areas but supports networking through different tools such as meetings, short-term scientific missions, training schools and dissemination activities of COST actions. It is also possible to join ongoing actions, which continue to expand during the funding period.

Proposals have to reflect the main characteristics of COST actions: to facilitate the exchange, creation, and application of knowledge; to have a European and multidisciplinary perspective; and, finally, to strengthen the scientific and technological bases of the proposed fields of knowledge.

The deadline for applications is 29 April 2020. Proposals can be submitted through the e-COST portal.
