New publication: Digital communication as a strategy of resistance at school. The case of the Federated Associations of Families of Pupils of Catalonia (aFFaC)

Dr Carles Lindín, member of the Institute for Research in Education (IRE), Dr Nelson de Luca Pretto, currently visiting professor at the IRE, and Dr. Antonio Bartolomé, director of the institute, have published the article “Digital communication as a strategy of resistance at school. The case of the Federated Associations of Families of Pupils of Catalonia (aFFaC)” in the framework of the monograph “Social movements, activisms and resistances from schools” whose editors are Dr Pablo Rivera-Vargas (IRE member), Dr Raquel Miño-Puigcercós (IRE member), Dr Ezequiel Passeron, and Dr Judith Jacovkis.

Abstract: The possibilities of digital communication for resistance and transformation in the educational sphere are analysed, based on the case of aFFaC (Federated Associations of Families of Pupils of Catalonia) on Twitter. From a mixed approach, we present an investigation of the messages produced over 5 years (6,399 tweets). The quantitative descriptive analysis of the data (comments, likes, retweets, hashtags, topics of interest and accounts cited) is accompanied by an analysis of the content, based on the categories of action established by the organisation. It can be seen that Twitter is consolidating itself as a digital agora in dispute, where families can use activism as a strategy of resistance, while at the same time contributing to organisation, communication and action against economic and political power: school privatisation and the implementation of technological platforms.

Keywords: Digital communication, Twitter, resistance, transformation, public education, families.
