We have compiled the Report!!

What is JIPI?

The Jornada d'Investigadors Predoctorals Interdisciplinària (JIPI) -Interdisciplinary Meeting of Predoctoral Researchers- would like to become a meeting point for all predoctoral researchers in Catalonia, where the possibility to meet researchers of other fields becomes a reality. It also aims to give answers to scary questions such as...

Who might be interested in my research?
Is my research useful?
What can I do after the PhD?

The JIPI is not a conventional conference. Here we experience with new formats to make the most from this short but intense day. For example...

Flash Talks

Short dynamic and educative talks (max. 10 minutes) presented by predoctoral researchers. This talks are sorted in thematic sessions.
Talks can be individual or collective (up to 3 speakers).
You can go to our YouTube channel or at our UBTV channel to see some examples.
Do you want to prepare a Flash Talk?? Go and have a look at our advices!

Doctors and the private sector

But what if... what if I don't want to carry on with research once I finish my thesis? Do I have options?
In the JIPI2014 we invite diferent doctors that have began their professional career in the academic work, until at a certain point they decided to jump into the private sector. Let's talk to them, ask them for advises and opinions, no fear!

Poster session

This year you can also contribute with a poster! During the coffee breaks you all will have the opportunity to know the research of other attendants through their posters. We expect you to interact so the conference is a real meeting point for young researchers in Catalonia.

A slot to share our opinion in several sensitive matters that do have an impact in our job! Science, faith, religion? Public versus private funding? Open soure? What do you think?
This year, anyone will be able to ask through twitter using the hashtag #JIPIask.
In this edition JIPI 2016 we'll have two sessions. At the morning session we'll discuss how popular science is made and at the afternoon session we will address the unionism between PhD students.

Jornada 2.0

If for any reason you are no able to assist to the conference, you can follow it through streaming!
What does it remain after the talk? In order to consolidate the JIPI beyond the day it takes place, we try to enhance its continuity though the internet.
Check our YouTube channel or our UBTV channel to see Flash Talks from previous years and follow us in Twitter to have constant information.

Speed Networking

This is the best way to meet other researchers or professionals to get direct feedback.
During an hour, every 5 minutes... Next! Change of partner!
In this 5 minutes each participant presents the research field of her interest to her partner. Participants can exchange contact details to keep further discussions. Next! Change of partner!

Registrations closed

There are two kinds of registration:

  • Presential:

Participate to the Speed Networking activity and meet people from other reserarch fields

  • Oral contribution:

Ask for a talk. In the same line as the previous year, we present allow the participants to talk in groups up to 3 speakers. The duration of the talk will be correlated to the number of participants and will never ecxeed 10 minutes. If the number of registered talks reaches a maximum value we will give preference according to this criteria:

    • 2. Permision to record the talk.
    • 3. Organizing committee evaluation.

Prepare my Flash Talk

At the Flash Talk sessions predocs have the opportunity to present their own research to a very diverse audience and to win a WONDERFUL GIFT .
If you don't want to spoil this chance we strongly suggest:

Your talk must be dynamic and educative. Temember that you are in front of a broad audience who might not be familiarized with your work. Your goal is to clearly explain what do you do, how and why. We recommend you to avoid the presentation of results and publications: you'd better focus on the essence of your research, which might be more powerful to pave the way to new collaborations. Talks are short: do not use a large number of slides and do not full them with a lot of text.

Be careful with the time-duration of your talk. Once the time is over, it is over. We will shut down microphones and if necessary, even lights. The JIPI is full of activities and we need to follow the schedule. Important: The maximum time per talk is: 1 speaker = 5 minutes; 2 speakers = 8 minutes; 3 speakers = 10 minutes.

Big advise: reherse. Present your work in a finite amount of time and to a diverse public can be very challlengin. For this reason, is convenient to practice. Rehersals will allow to to identify possible issues such as too many slides or too long/short/abstruse talk and you will feel more relaxed and ready to give the Talk.

PS: Do you want to use our logo in you presentation? Download it here.

Despite it is not mandatory, we encourage the speakers to present their works in English (it is not mandatory). Talks are short and you are in front of an friendly audience. This is a very good chance to learn and improve your oral abilities.

To get familiar with the format. We suggest you to visit our YouTube channel and UBTV (JIPI2013, JIPI2014, JIPI2015), where you will find the videos of the previous Flast Talks.

There are gifts for the best talks!!

Since 2nd JIPI participants can vote for the best talk in every session. In here, we ofer the oral contributions of some the winners of the 2015 edition.

Prepare my poster

At poster session predocs have the opportunity to present their investigation to a very diverse audience. If you don't want to spoil this chance we suggest:

Giving a description of your research is the purpose of the poster. Thus, predocs must take into account that they will have a very diverse audience and they might be not familiar with the work. Therefore, the poster should be prepared in order to introduce your research to a general audience.

The main goal is explaining clearly in what are we researching, how, and why. Hence we recommend you not to stress your particular results or publications, but the essence of the work, which might be more powerful to pave the way to new collaborations.

All posters should be printed in DIN A1 in order to make its exhibition and presentation easier. Nevertheless we will accept posters in any format.

Finally, despite it is not mandatory, we encourage you to prepare the poster in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am a researcher; What can I learn in this event?
If you take part in the initiative, you can present your work in a summarized way. You'll meet other people doing similar research and unexpected collaboration opportunities will appear.
I am a businessman; What can I learn in this event?
The JIPI will work as a laboratory for new ideas, allowing the participants to find new contacts with highly qualified people. It represents a new way to find collaboration between the public and the private sectors.
I am a citizen interested in science; What can I learn in this event?
The JIPI is an opportunity to approach science to society, to show which research is carried out at the different catalan centers, and to allow citizens to interact with researches through original activities such as the Worldcafe or the Speednetworking.
I am afraid I will not understand anything in the FlashTalk sessions.
Talks are brief and concise. The main objective is to explain the main points of the research to a broad audience.
Activities: I do not understand the speednetworking.
Our objective is to put in contact people with similar research interests and similar working tools. That is why registration is open to everybody (researches, companies and citizens). You'll find more detals here.
Activities: I do not understand the worldcafe.
It is an opportunity to debate about science and society with experts of the field. This activity appears as a laboratory for new ideas, and is open to everybody.
Activities: I do not understand the entrepreneurship session.
It is an opportunity to learn about the experience from three scientists who became entrepreneurs creating their own scientific and technological companies. This activity is open to the general audience and will be highly participative. You'll find more details here.
Oral contributions seem to be too much short.
The objective of the meeting is to present your research briefly and concisely. It is a good (and original) exercice to evaluate the knowledge of your research topic.
Oral contributions seem too long.
This format is short enough in order to avoid tedium, and is long enough to be deep. Enoy the experience depends on the speakers... do you accept the challenge?
I am a company/institution; and I would linke to sponsor this event this year or the years to come.
This event is an original opportunity to create a young and talented image. Moreover, it represents a determined bet to innovation and research. If you want to join us, do not hesitate to contact us.
Why do you want to record the FlashTalks?
The JIPI wants to start a long-term project where research is moved closer to society. In this sense, talks will be available on the internet so that speakers can get feedback from their communicative abilities. This web will become a scientific repository and a meeting point for starters.
