We present with this communication the empirical investigation of a virtual forum and some reflections about research in CMC. A process of theoretical and methodological conceptualisation was needed and this led us to develop a new model of analysis which is grounded in the concept of interconnectivity. In this way we have gained access to the specificity of interaction and communication in the electronic forum.

The implantation of Internet contributes to an increase of users of the new systems of CMO. The CMDA is fundamental to give account of how we communicated in the Information Society. We will define the CMO and CMDA concepts, we will present some sociotechnical media of communication (like electronic mails, chats and ICQ), we will give account of the contributions of CMDA to other areas of knowledge. Finally, we will see what are the variables of analysis of this discipline (ones linked to the sociotechnical media and others linked to the communicative situation).

Chats, e-mail, mailing lists and forums are new communication tools we have on hand that we can use not only for personal and recreational purposes, but also for professional development. Your personal horizon broadens and, consequently, your professional perspective broadens. You save both time and money and you are much more productive.

Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis: The State of the Art
(Susan C. Herring, Indiana University, Bloomington)

This talk presents an overview of Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis CMDA), an approach that has been fruitfully applied to Internet-based communication in a number of studies over the pastseveral years. CMDA draws on empirical methods from linguistics,sociology, rhetoric, semiotics and other disciplines to analyze language and language use in online contexts. The application of these methods to questions of form, meaning, interaction, and social organization is illustrated.

Chats are written conversations, and, therefore, share some features with writing and orality. The purpose of this article is to deepen in the later aspect: from a real chat, we describe and analyse some characteristic phonetic aspects and transcodic markers of oral conversation that appear/come out in that kind of texts.

Com responem els missatges de correu electrònic? Noves formes de diàleg (Marta Payà, UB)

E-mail messages constitute a new and emergent genre, which is between oral and written channels. Using a corpus of e-mail messages in Catalan, we analyse three types of structures that the replies to e-mail messages may adopt (by linking and quoting). These three modalities have a dialogic form in different degrees, although they have important differences from the most classical and usual interaction (at least, until now...).

Recursos d’enginyeria lingüística del català: tractament de noms propis (Montserrat Arévalo i M. José Simón, CLiC)

Named entities play an important role in Natural Language Processing techniques such as Information Retrieval and Extraction. We present an entity recognition system based on two sources of information: trigger words surrounding named entities and a semantic classification. We first analyze the problems arising from recognizing these entities; secondly, we present the methodology used to create a database of named entities and a computational grammar that enables their recognition and classification.

Coses dites, coses fetes.

In our paper, we will try to highlight several different tools and processes used in text-only computer mediated social environments (IRC, MUDs and MOOs). Specially, we will focus on those which are used to distinguish things that are said from things that are done in those social environments.

From a linguistic approach to the study of language used in scientific and technical areas it is considered that there exists a general confusion at different levels between what it is called technical language or technolect (subject specific language) and what it is known as social language or sociolect. Therefore the aims of this communication are as follows:

  • To describe the main features which differentiate social from technical language, sociolects from technolects.
  • To specifically analyse characteristics that differentiate jargon used in a specific area - in this case jargon from specialised language used on the internet.
  • To determine specific criteria that can be used to identify technical jargon on the internet and distinguish it from technical language.

The paper intends to open reflexion (mainly to people interested in Terminology) as regards the fact of understanding Internet as:

  • a fabulous tool for the diferent fases in the terminological work;
  • a practically uncoverable corpus useful for being continually informed about every terminological proposal;
  • a refreshing source which always contains the latest information about the emerging terminology (specially in the channels closest to oral registers, such as chats and individual e-mails).

La nostra experiència a VilaWeb
(Mar Iglesias, VilaWeb)

Vilaweb was born in 1995 and designed as a local directory focusing on getting all web sites written in catalan language. Starting on this directory an electronic newspaper was established in order to keep our closest community permanently informed by internet and to create, in contrast to the classical media, a new interactive model.

Recursos d’enginyeria lingüística del català: anàlisi morfològica i WordNet (Mònica López, Laia Paluouzié i Gerard Escudero, CLiC)

The main aim of this talk is the presentation of two resources for the automatic processing of the Catalan language: a morphological analyzer and a WordNet, a Lexical Knowledge Base.
Morphological analyzers are linguistic resources needed by almost all applications in the Natural Language Processing field. Our tool works in the following manner: it provides the lemma and morphosyntactic label and features for every word in a text. This involves a deep study of the Catalan morphology.
WordNet consists of conceptual information about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. It establishes a link between the different senses of the words and conceptual hierarchies. These links and structures are very useful for all Natural Language applications in which semantic tasks are involved.

We study the evolution of the individual starting with the isolation of the first years of home computers without any external world connection, to a global concept of communication. Internet allows a new level of worldwide communication unprecedented in human history. We study the causes that move somebody to be a part of a WWW virtual community, the tools that can use and the latest trends. We focus on expectations, threads and common tasks managing a virtual community in the University world.
