Strengths:
- Cultural formations (‘speech communities’); shared histories of use (e.g. Cherny 1999)
Limitations:
- Variation within genres cuts across genre lines (e.g. synchronicity, gender)
- Does not account for experimental and emergent CMC types that lack communities of users
