Cross-linguistic Workshop
on Sign Language Classifier Constructions

Barcelona, September 29th, 2004
Institut d'Estudis Catalans, Carrer del Carme, 47
(see directions in Location and Venue)

Organizer: Professor Diane Brentari, Purdue University

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Institut d'EstudisCatalans

The purpose of this workshop is to share the analyses that resulted from a cross-linguistic study of sign language classifier systems. This NSF-funded project collected data from three different sign languages families (11 sign languages in total). An identical set of materials and procedures were used with all languages, which includes narratives, elicitation materials, and judgments of grammaticality, allowing reliable comparison of structures across all of the sign languages. The sign languages represented in the workshop are: Swiss German Sign Language, Swedish Sign Language, Sign Language of the Netherlands, Japanese Sign Language, Hong Kong Sign Language, Danish Sign Language, and American Sign Language. The project also includes German Sign Language, Israeli Sign Language, Croatian Sign Language, and British Sign Language.

All registrants of TISLR 8 who have pre-registered are invited to attend free of charge.

Due to space limitations, registration to the workshop is no longer possible.

American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters will be provided.
