HUMANISM AND TRANSMISSION OF EPIGRAPHY

1. Description and objectives:

LITTERA has followed the different lines of transmission of ancient inscriptions during the XV, XVI, XVII, and XVIII centuries. Our aim is, on the one hand, to revise and complete the available information on the sources of the epigraphy of Hispania (a labour closely related to the re-edition of the second volume of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum), and, on the other, to deal with different aspects of the reception of Antiquity during the Renaissance, particularly, the antiquarian and epigraphic activity of certain humanists, like Pere Miquel Carbonell, Lluís Pons d’Icard, Jeroni Pau, Antonio Agustín or Jeroni Pujades in Hispania, the Italian humanist Ciriacus of Ancona or the Portuguese Aquiles Estaço, who is closely related to the epigraphy of the city of Rome.

The group owns, in its office in Barcelona, an increasingly large quantity of documentary material: epigraphic, historic, and antiquarian manuscripts in microfilm collected from the most prestigious European Libraries.

It must also be commented that Prof. Mayer has carried out a labour of director of Doctor’s Degree Theses devoted to the study of epigraphic investigation, among which can be counted the theses of Prof. Dr. Joan Carbonell ("Epigrafia i numismàtica a l'epistolari d'Antonio Agustín", Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 1991) and of Dr. Helena Gimeno ("Historia de la investigación epigráfica en España en los siglos XVI y XVII a la luz del recuperado manuscrito del Conde de Guimerá", Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 1992, Institución Fernando el Católico, Zaragoza, 1997). Dr. Mayer has also acted as director of the thesis written by Antonio Pladevall i Arumí, “La Il·lustració a Vic”, presented on 1998 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

Finally, Alejandra Guzmán Almagro has benefited from a FPI (Research Staff Training) scholarship from the Catalan Government (1999-2002) for the development of her thesis “La transmisión de la epigrafía en la Roma del siglo XVI a través de los manuscritos inéditos del humanista portugués Aquiles Estaço”, which was read at the Universitat de Barcelona on 2003. As a first step, A. Guzmán had presented an essay for her Doctor’s Degree second  year, which was called “La transmisión de la epigrafía en el siglo XVI, Manuscritos epigráficos conservados en bibliotecas y archivos catalanes” (Universitat de Barcelona, Departament de Filologia Llatina, 2000). This work received the first prize for the best research essay presented on a Spanish University from the Spanish Society of Latin Studies (SELAT) and the Spanish Society of Classical Studies (SEEC).
