LATIN LITERATURE
1. Description and objectives:
Latin Philology is the area of knowledge which most of the LITTERA group’s members are devoted to. A great proportion of the educational activity is related to this field and it is also object of scientific research from their part. Thus, on 1989, members of this group developed a research project fundet by the DGICYT for the study of “Hispano-Roman Literature” (P 89 0265).
1.1. Textual critic
|
One of the lines of research developed by members of LITTERA is textual critics of the works of Latin writers. Javier Velaza has worked on some aspects of the history of the textual transmission of Tacitus, Martial, and, more recently, Vergil. This last author has been the object of his book Itur in antiquam silvam. Un estudio sobre la tradición antigua del texto de Virgilio. Marc Mayer has written several contributions on the text of the Historia Augusta, and Lambert Ferreres and Jordi Avilés have dealt on the textual transmission of a number of Christian writers. |

1.2. Historia Augusta
|
The Historia Augusta is a compilation of the biographies of the Roman emperors from Hadrian to Numerianus. Our historic knowledge of this long period of Roman History depends to a great extent on this work. Nonetheless, the relevance of the Historia Augusta as a historic document is gravely hampered by the problem of its reliability. From 1962, specialists in Philology, Ancient History, Archaeology, Epigraphy and Numismatics consistently meet on a series of colloquia aimed towards the analysis and sharing of their conclusions regarding the problems of these biographies. |

From 1991, the responsibility for the organisation of these colloquia is held by an international committee including members of the Universitat de Barcelona, as well as those of Paris IV-Sorbonne, Bonn, Geneva, Macerata, and Perugia. On 1993, Empuries hosted the first colloquium Barcinonense, and the second one was cellebrated on the same place on 2002.
