Surveys knowledge of Africa in Europe, especially Iberia, from the writings of Isidore of Seville to descriptions of Ethiopia in treatises such as Orto de esposo, noting the prevalence of the biblical idea that Africa was populated by the sons of Cam, and the association of Africa with Moors and Islam, but also drawing attention to the first direct observations on non-Islamic black African populations in the writings of Ramon Llull.
