Any real attempt to convert the "infidels", as Llull said in the Vita coaetania, had to abandon traditional methods of attacking the opponent's beliefs on the basis of citations of authorities, a tactic which only brought forth indignant defenses or endless discussions concerning the interpretations of those authorities. It was a question of talking not about books but about beliefs, and above all to be disposed to demonstrate the truth of the Christian faith. And if this could not be done by traditional methods, one had to find others. The mine that Ramon Llull discovered to face this multiple challenge was the Art, a mine that not only permitted him to demonstrate the articles of the Christian faith, but also to explain other fields of knowledge and to formulate a method of contemplation, with no division between ciència and amància.
