Modules and Courses

1. Metamodule: Advanced Studies in Linguistics

This metamodule consists of a compulsory core module on linguistic theory and methodology and an advanced module on English, Catalan and Spanish linguistics

Module 1: Core courses on General Linguistic Theory and Methodology

Module 2: Specific Courses on English, Catalan and  Spanish Linguistics

  • 10 ECTS of compulsory courses
  • Teaching period: October-December
  • 10 ECTS
  • Teaching period:October-December

Module 1: Core Courses on General Linguistic Theory and Methodology

This module aims to build the theoretical and methodological foundation that will enable students to carry out formal, empirical, rigorous and innovative language research. It consists of two compulsory courses of five ECTS each:

  • Corpus Linguistics is a methodological course that will introduce students to the essential tools for building reliable linguistic or communicative corpora, managing corpus information stored in electronic databases, and extracting, analyzing and interpreting this information.

  • Language and Conceptualization aims to develop students’ ability to analyze and interpret data from different perspectives. The data-analysis approach of cognitive linguistics connects language to the general cognitive skills essential to communication (i.e. perception processes and representation of category-based knowledge).

The knowledge and skills acquired in this core module will be the foundation of students’ later specialization.

Module 2: Specific Courses on English, Catalan and  Spanish Linguistics

This module aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of the internal structure of language ( English, Catalan and  Spanish) and the factors that affect and modify this structure. It is composed of three optional courses of five ECTS each. Students choose two of the following options:

  • Lexis and argument structure
  • Contrastive linguistics
  • Grammaticalization  and linguistic change

Students will learn to characterize different linguistic phenomena in terms of structure (morphology and syntax), time (synchronic and diachronic linguistics) and systems (contrastive linguistics).  The study of language is the common thread that runs through lexis and communication and are thus linked in a continuum.

2. Metamodule: Specialization

Module 3: Lexicology and lexicography

Module 4: Linguistic communication

  • 20 ECTS of compulsory courses
  • Teaching period: January - March
  • 20 ECTS of compulsory courses
  • Teaching period: January-March

Module 3: Lexicology and Lexicography

Lexicology and Lexicography is an optional specialization module designed to train future lexicographers, lexicologists, terminologists and knowledge managers. It consists of four compulsory courses of five ECTS each:

  • Dictionary structure and lexical structure
  • Analysis of lexicographic discourse
  • History of lexicography and dictionary typology
  • Practical Lexicography: monolingual and bilingual dictionaries.

This module aims to provide comprehensive, specialized training on the nature and complexity of lexical relations in language and on the procedures that underlie the scientific study of lexis.

To meet these objectives, students must:

1. Apply a cognitive approach to the in-depth study of lexical structure, taking the following factors (among others) into account: the processes of perception and categorization of the world;  the basic logical relations between lexical units (equivalence, inclusion, opposition); the diversification of meaning and semantic networks; and the influence of cultural and pragmatic issues on lexis.

2. Develop the knowledge and skills needed to organize lexical information in dictionaries and other lexical resources. Students will learn about the elements that form the micro and macrostructure of dictionaries and lend coherence to their structure. They will be able to distinguish different types of dictionaries and the information that can be found in them and analyze the lexicological theory that dictionaries are based on.

Module 4: Linguistic Communication

Linguistic Communication is an optional specialization module designed to train future lobby consultants, multimedia analysts, advertising and marketing analysts, communications professionals and institutional spokespersons. It consists of four compulsory courses of five ECTS each:

  • Multimodal communication and intertextuality
  • Metaphor, metonymy and conceptual schemas
  • Discourse and functional variation
  • Rhetoric, oratory and pragmatics.

This module aims to provide comprehensive, specialized training on the nature and complexity of linguistic and audiovisual communication and on the procedures that underlie the analysis of multimodal discourse.

To meet these objectives, students must:

  1. Study the forms, models and categories of perception and discourse and the communication processes and networks that can be established depending on these categories. Students will learn about the elements that belong to each informative category and the means by which they can be shown, organized and connected. They will also be taught about the values and functions of every category.
  2. Recognize the complex nature of communication strategies and of the reasons for and objectives of communication. Students will learn about the acquisition of conceptualization strategies and the creation of conceptual schemes such as the transfer of meaning through metaphor or metonymy. They will also be taught how to organize discourse according to topic, communication purpose and cultural and social values.
  3. Develop the skills and knowledge needed to analyze and distinguish different informative categories and the strategies that correspond to different types of discourse, interpret the values that are explicitly and implicitly expressed through the organization of discourse and create discourse using certain strategies or for a specific purpose.
