LINE: BIOLOGICAL AGGRESION AND RESPONSE MECHANISMS |
| |
Formed by teams that investigate response mechanisms to biological aggressions from multiple points of view. The activity in this area is very diverse, though it has two principal lines. On the one hand, the study of infectious and toxic agents, and on the other hand, the organisms immunological and inflammatory reactions. Among other topics of general interest, this area deals with problems as important as retroviral diseases (AIDS) and the immunology of transplants. Nevertheless, the thematic variety of its lines of research also contemplates aspects such as gene expression, epidemiology, autoimmune diseases and analytical techniques in mass spectrometry. |

LINE: RESPIRATORY, CARDIOVASCULAR AND RENAL PATHOLOGY |
| |
This area focuses on the study of three vital parts of the organism: the respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal systems. It is concerned with the various pathologies that affect these systems and the blood supply. Half the teams study arterial hypertension, coronary diseases and electrophysiology; lipids as a cardiovascular risk factor; nephro-urological diseases and kidney transplants. The five remaining teams are part of the Red Respira network, where a large number of state centres collaborate. Its research programmes include inflammation and repair of the respiratory tract, the molecular basis for respiratory infections, the biopathology of lung cancer, respiratory disorders in sleep and respiratory insufficiency. |

LINE: CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL NEUROSCIENCIES |
| |
This is the area that is specialised in the study of the neurological and psychiatric diseases. With full collaboration between the experimental and clinical areas, ranging from the structure/function relationship of the nervous system and its basic molecular mechanisms of neurotransmission and cellular death to the development and assessment of new experimental therapies. Some of the pathologies that are investigated are the neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases of the nervous system and severe psychiatric alterations. The various teams complement each other combining objectives, skills and know-how. |

LINE: ONCOLOGY AND HAEMATOLOGY |
| |
The teams that form this area carry out basic, experimental and clinical research in the areas of oncology and haematology. They aim to improve prevention, prognosis, and treatment of a group of diseases that are becoming increasingly common in our society: cancerous processes. The research lines of the various teams devoted to oncology centre on the molecular mechanisms involved in the proliferation and programmed death of cells, on the development of neoplastic models and on improving the diagnosis of cancer patients with new tumour markers. On the other hand, the teams associated with haemato-oncology study the various erythropathies, haemostatic disorders and blood coagulation. |

| LINE: PHSYSIOPATHOLOGY IN MEDICAL AND SURGICAL DISEASES |
| |
.This area of research join different groups of the School of Medicine, non-integrated to IDIBAPS or IDIBELL. It performs, in a multidisciplinary way, studies about fisiopathology in medical and surgical diseases of great relevance in clinical practica and health care. The teams are focused on pharmacological research, dermatological diseases, fisiopatology of pediatric illness, multiorgan failure in critical care, and the age-related diseases. Surgical research is mainly oriented to in subjects related with diagnosis and treatment of skeletal muscle patology, abdominal organs, vascular and ophalmic pathology. Moreover, in the field of preventive and public health, it perfoms relevant research in health promotion and epidemiological studies. |
