General organization:

The Master program will take place over two years and will be distributed into 300 theoretical class hours, 300 hours of practical workshops, 260 hours of tutored practical classes for acquiring clinical experience ("practicum") in different intensive care units and system of medical emergencies and 40 hours dedicated to a project of investigation. The classes will be given in Spanish (due to the presence of foreign students) following the university academic calendar.

During the first course 6-8 hours will be given on Wednesdays (4 hours in the morning and 2-4 hours in the afternoon), alternating theoretical classes with theoretical-practical workshops. In addition, 60 hours of optional seminars are proposed. 

During the second course tutored practical classes and optional seminars will be performed throughout the first trimester, with classes on theory over the second trimester, and exclusive dedication to the individual elaboration of the course Project during the last trimester. 

 

Distribution of the educational program:

Abordaje al cuidado general del paciente crítico

(1 crédito)


 

The Master will begin with the description of the course and organizational analysis of the ICU. Aspects affecting response to the disease and general situations which affect patient well-being will be covered in depth.

     

Monitorización del paciente crítico

(3 créditos)


 

With the aim of perfecting the principles and clinical indications of the different catheters and monitoring systems. Classes of theory will be applied on patient hemodynamics, cardiac and nervous system monitoring. Practical workshops will be undertaken on equipment provided by different enterprises.   

     

Sedación y analgesia

(1 crédito)


 

The physiological bases, pharmacologic control and care related to pain, distress and anxiety will be described. Methods for the evaluation and control of sedation and muscle relaxation will be studied in depth.   

     

Manejo y cuidados de la vía aérea

(2 créditos)


  Airway procedures and management, care and guidelines of action of the ASA compared to the difficult airway will be covered.    
     

Oxigenoterapia y ventilación mecánica

(4 créditos)


  This block will provide in depth studies on the knowledge, systems, techniques and care necessary to achieve effective oxygenation. Theoretical-practical workshops will be performed on the different modalities of invasive and non invasive ventilation.   
     

Reanimación cardiopulmonar

(5 créditos)


  Theoretical-practical module on the chain of survival in which the skills involved in basic and advanced life support will be taught. Techniques of cardioversion, defibrillation, use of the automatic defibrillator and cardiorespiratory pharmacotherapy will be discussed.    
     

Procedimientos generales en la atención al paciente grave

(2 créditos)


  This block will work on the general procedures and techniques applied in critical patients and in emergency situations: vascular routes, sample extraction, collection of microbiological samples, placement and care of drains and catheters, eye care, etc. Likewise, the analytical parameters and the utility of radiological examinations will be evaluated.
