The city in the Muslim world: medieval urban planning and architectural heritage conservation in Fez

We approach the urban and architectural history of the Moroccan city of Fez, UNESCO World Heritage Site, by the archaeologist and professor of art and architecture Said Ennahid.

At the IEMed he will make a critical evaluation of the main archaeological and historical preservation projects carried out in Fez in the last 40 years.

Said Ennahid

Archaeologist and professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.

He is an expert member of the International Committee of Historic Cities and Towns (CIVVIH) and an associate member of the International Scientific Committee on the Heritage of the Twentieth Century (ISC20C) of the International Council of Monuments and Historic Sites (ICOMOS).

His areas of research and teaching include Islamic Archaeology, Art, Architecture and Urbanism, Medieval Historiography and Historical Geography, Architecture and Urbanism of the French colonial period, and the Cultural Heritage of contemporary African Islamic societies.

Some of his publications are: “ Historical Archeology in North Africa”  (ed., Elsevier eBooks, 2023), “Searching for Rome: French Colonial Archeology and Urban Planning in Morocco” (in  Rome and the Colonial City, Rethinking the Grid , 2022) and “Adding Muslims: Layers of Functioning Archaeological Sites in Northwestern Morocco” (with E. Ross, in  Berlin Studies of the Ancient World , Vol. 40, 2017).
