I will discuss some of the relationships between uses of ‘Holmes’ is sentences such as ‘Holmes smokes a pipe’ and ‘Holmes is Doyle’s most recognizable character’, focusing on the thesis that ‘Holmes’ nonambiguously serves as a name for an abstract character. I pause on ambiguity tests, such as those involving VP ellipsis and relative clauses.
