The research activity is performed on different fields related to waterborne diseases. The wide diversity of expertise by the scientific members of the research group among the different fields of Microbiology, provide MARS of an interdisciplinary character. Our research group performs field studies of environmental samples including wastewater, river, sludge, sea water, drinking water as well as cooling towers, food and other matrices. The methods used include systems of traditional microbiology and virology, study of bacteriophages, analysis of animal viruses and studies of parasites by cell culture. The group has a wide experience in molecular techniques, applied to studies on Virology, Bacteriology and Parasitology, including DNA and protein analysis, electronic and fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry.

The research activity of the group embraces the study of different pathogenic microorganisms and indicators (bacteria, viruses and parasites) in environmental samples, approaches to guarantee the drinking water quality, evaluation of treatments of environmental samples as well as quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). The group has projects to study the mobility of genes related to virulence in the environment, to trace the faecal pollution of the waters, to study quorum sensing in bacteria, microchip development for pathogen detection, to analyze the interaction between microorganisms (bacterium-protozoan and virus-bacterium) and to study the regulation mechanisms of virulence factors, among others.
