| The library of the
History of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Law and Administration Unit preserves
part of the legacy of the former College of San Victoriano and is among
the best libraries in Catalonia in the field of the history of pharmacy.
Its collection includes manuscripts, books of prescriptions, more than 6,000
books of great value covering themes such as pharmacy, chemistry, botany,
and medicine, and a set of local and foreign pharmacopoeias. The library
preserves old texts by many famous physicians and pharmacists, among them
Vélez de Arciniega, Nicholas Lemery, Leclerc de Buffon, Cadet de
Gassicourt, Virey, Lavoisier, Hernández de Gregorio, Baumé,
Davy and Orfila. The most valuable individual item is, without doubt, the
only known copy of the Concordie Apothecariorum Barchinone (1511), written
at the request of the city's College of Apothecaries. It is considered to
be the first pharmacopoeia in the old Spanish kingdoms, and the second in
the world after the Florence publication of 1498. |
