The variety of the museum's collections is reflected in
its two botanical collections, started at the beginning of the 18th century
and finished in the mid 19th century. The earlier collection comes from
the Marian Library in the Saint Francis convent in Barcelona, and bears
annotations by the French botanist P.A. Pourret. The other collection
dates from the second half of the 19th century and contains more than
three thousand botanic specimens. It was traditionally known as the Balvey
herbarium, although a detailed study has shown it to be fundamentally
the work of J. Pujol and O. Bordère.
