Heritage and War in Europe’s Universities
09.11.16

Each year on 18 November, Europe’s universities celebrate European University Heritage Day. This year Universeum, the European University Heritage Network, focuses on the relationship between heritage and war. As part of the commemoration, the University of Barcelona will showcase a selection of objects related to war that come from its collections.

The Pavelló de la República CRAI Library is considered one of the leading archive libraries in the world on Spain’s Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and exile, the Franco regime, and Spain’s transition to democracy. In addition, the Historical Archive of the University of Barcelona has a major collection of documentary and photographic resources.

With this small selection of objects, our aim is to illustrate one of the bloodiest episodes in Spain’s recent history, the Spanish Civil War, through posters, photographs, stamps and other items. In some cases, you can see the damage caused by aerial bombardments on the Historic Building of the University of Barcelona. Other items, such as posters, show how the various factions engaged in the conflict displayed their propaganda. Lastly, you can find stamps and other singular objects relating to the conflict.

All of the materials come from the two collections mentioned above.
