Nº 1: The World Trade Organization in the international economic order

Synopsis: Everybody hears or reads
about the World Trade Organisation (WTO). But it doesn't seem that this wide and
daily presence of the WTO in the media comes along with a real
understanding of its nature and its role in the framework of the present global
economic order, where the capitalism is the hegemonic system. This text, written
by Ramon Torrent, director of the Observatory of
Globalisation and Professor of Political
Economy at the University of Barcelona, aims to contribute to clarify
these issues by offering an introductory and very general overview that may,
without going deeply into details (which are, nevertheless, very important by
themselves), highlight the role of the WTO in the present international
economic "architecture".

Synopsis: Paper by John Williamson,
Senior Fellow of the Institute for International
Economics (Washington), that he presented at the International
Workshop on "The regulatory framework of Globalisation",
organised by the Observatory of Globalisation of the University of Barcelona
the 5th and 6th October 2001. The author served as Project Director for
the Zedillo Panel, but views expressed in this paper do not necessarily reflect
those of members of the Panel. They do not reflect either the views of the
Observatory of Globalisation of the University of Barcelona or the ones of the
European Commission (who financed the organisation of the Workshop).
