A Symposium on Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing (OUP, 2007)by Miranda Fricker (Birkbeck. University of London)
In Epistemic Injustice, Miranda Fricker explores a territory halfway between epistemology and ethics by focusing on two forms of injustice that are distinctively epistemic. What she calls testimonial injustice occurs when the level of our credibility is downgraded by e.g. prejudice, gender or race. Hermeneutical injustice arises when, in trying to make sense of our social experiences, we are left at an unfair disadvantage by a void in the interpretative resources available in our community. Both kinds of injustice illustrate how issues of social identity and power impinge on how we operate as knowers and inquirers. Miranda Fricker’s treatment of these two types of credibility deficits touches on capacities essential for human value, but her analysis goes beyond the ethics of these epistemic practices and has implications for issues that are relevant in feminist theory and political philosophy.
