Tom Avery
Tom received his bachelors degree from the University of Essex, where, through reading the work of Merleau-Ponty and John McDowell in tandem, he acquired an unrelenting interest in perception, and the philosophical study of sense-experience. He then undertook the University of London’s MPhil Stud degree at University College London, and specialised in the metaphysics of experience, exploring the Kantian, phenomenological, as well as the Anglo-American treatments of the topic. In doing so, he acquired a complementary interest in the nature of the subjects of such experiences, and the nature of ‘here’-thoughts and ‘I’-thoughts. Tom is exploring the intersection of these issues through addressing the manner in which space figures in our ordinary perceptual experiences, and the role such experiences play in grounding our demonstrative judgements about places. He is exploring these ideas in his doctoral thesis.
