General learning objectives
 
  • To provide an adequate knowledge of medicines and the substances used to manufacture them; pharmaceutical technology and the physical, chemical and biological control of medicines; metabolism and the effects of medicines; public health; health education; and the legislative framework governing work in the pharmaceutical field.

  • To stimulate autonomous learning, encourage personal study both individually and in teams, and foster the ability to use scientific method in experimental design.  Also, to develop critical thinking in the evaluation of problems, decision-taking and leadership.    

  • To train professionals capable of working in the primary healthcare system and contributing to its optimal functioning through effective leadership and management.  Also, to provide students with the foundation for further pharmaceutical specialization, scientific research and teaching.    
 
Basic contents of the curriculum
 
Cell biology; applied physics and chemical physics; applied mathematics; organic and inorganic chemistry; human anatomy and physiology; biochemistry; pharmaceutical botany; parasitology; molecular and genetic biology; plant physiology; microbiology; analytical chemistry; pharmaceutical chemistry; pharmacognosy; physiopathology; drug synthesis; instrumental methods; pharmacology; environmental management, immunology; nutrition and bromatology; pharmaceutical technology; biostatistics, clinical biochemistry and hematology; clinical microbiology and parasitology; biopharmacy and pharmacokinetics; pharmaceutical biotechnology; legislation and deontology; toxicology; clinical pharmacy and pharmacotherapy; practical pharmacology and toxicology; public health.
 
What students should have
 
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, natural sciences, mathematics, physics and human physiology.   

  • Skill in handling laboratory equipment and materials.  

  • nowledge of English and of computers at a user level.
 
Career options
 
  • Pharmacy in the community and in hospitals (compounding and dispensing medicines to the public).
  • Pharmaceutical industry (drug development, manufacturing, control and analysis).

  • Clinical analysis of water and medicines for the government, the food industry and companies in environmental health, biotechnology and medicinal plants.

Students may continue after graduation, acquiring training in research or advancing their studies through the UB’s doctoral programs or postgraduate studies
