The Dean’s letter of welcome

On behalf of the Faculty of Chemistry, I would like to welcome everyone who has accessed this webpage, which is an important means of communication and dissemination for all: external students who want to find out about our courses and methods, internal students who use this tool as a means of communication and Contact us, researchers who are interested in our research, industry staff in the sector who want more information about our services, and anyone else who is interested for whatever reason. We hope that you will find the information that you need about our activities, processes and procedures, and that the webpage will be of use to you as a communication tool.

Students from secondary schools or universities in Spain and abroad will find detailed descriptions on this webpage of the curriculums for the chemistry, chemical engineering and materials engineering courses. These courses have been taught in the Faculty for many years. Consequently, we have great experience in them and offer the highest quality teaching, which has been widely recognised. For example, in 2004 and 2005, the newspaper “El Mundo” selected the UB Faculty as the best public university faculty for studying chemistry. Likewise, in February 2005, the magazine “Capital” recommended the UB’s Faculty of Chemistry as the best Spanish centre for chemistry courses. The Faculty is equipped with IT classrooms, laboratories and audiovisual materials and provides opportunities for practical training in the Faculty’s departments and in industry. Among other aspects, our Tutorial Action Plan offers each student his/her own tutor, who remains with him/her throughout the degree. Each year, over three hundred new students enter the Faculty to take one of our courses, which include obligatory, optional and free-choice subjects. In addition, you can complete your training with one of the UB’s University Extension Courses, some of which are taught at the Faculty of Chemistry. You can also consult the various grants that apply to our Faculty, whether you are interested in student exchanges with other Spanish or European universities, for examples those organized by the Seneca-Sicue and Socrates-Erasmus programs, or financial aid to support our activities. It is a time of major changes. We are faced with the challenge of the European Higher Education Area curriculums, which will facilitate the transfer of students, knowledge and work among European countries, and by the UB’s own challenge of establishing new master’s degrees to provide more specialized training and preparation for doctoral programs.

Degree holders and professionals in the chemistry sector—including recent graduates and staff of companies and public or private institutions—who wish to complete their training with postgraduate and university extension courses, master’s degrees and doctoral programs, can find information on this webpage about the courses on offer and the application procedures. In addition, the webpage can be used by those who wish to Contact us one of the Faculty’s many research groups, which are distributed among the various departments, either to ask them to collaborate or to establish agreements or contracts. Due to the high level of the Faculty’s research groups, we have enough good quality, precise instruments to provide services for industry and other universities and research centres. The Faculty participates in national and international projects, and undertakes numerous exchanges of knowledge, teaching staff and students, with which it attains an extremely high level of scientific production. All of the aforementioned aspects provide evidence of the recognized quality of our research. A study by Nazario Martín, professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of León, and Ignacio Nebot, professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Valencia, highlighted the quality of the research that is undertaken in the UB’s Faculty of Chemistry and showed that we are the university school that publishes the highest number of articles and is cited most, after the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Everyone, including students, lecturers or administration and services staff, can find information of use on our webpage, including job and grant notices, application forms, reservations for IT rooms, programs of events, course announcements, facts about the submission and defence of theses and many other issues.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has made this web page possible: the UB’s governing bodies, for their initiative and support; the Faculty’s Web Committee, which comprises lecturers from each department as well as administrative and services staff, and has done an excellent job; and everyone in the Faculty who, in one way or other, has made a positive contribution. We are open to constructive criticism and hope to make improvements in the future. Consequently, we welcome your suggestions, which will help us to ensure that our webpage meets your expectations and that the Faculty runs smoothly.

I hope you enjoy browsing our webpage.

Kind regards,

Pere Lluís Cabot Julià
