Reports on social responsabilitySince the academic year 2008-2009, the University of Barcelona has prepared an annual report on social responsibility, reflecting all of our impacts on society. As of the academic year 2010-2011, the full report has been accompanied by an executive summary that presents key figures for the different areas of our activity, providing a general overview of our main results and outcomes. From a methodological standpoint, the UB reports follow the recommendations and guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an independent body that sets global standards for social responsibility and also collaborates with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Drawing on the set of indicators proposed by the GRI, a series of meetings with each stakeholder group of the University identified the indicators that would show a picture of the University that was as precise as possible. In GRI terminology, these indicators are called material indicators. The UB Committee for Social Responsibility then made a final selection of the most relevant indicators, creating and adding any necessary UB-specific indicators that do not appear in the GRI. The collection of information requires effective communication with the various bodies responsible for information management at the University. For this reason, when work began on the first report on social responsibility at the Office for Internal Control, Risks and Corporate Social Responsibility, meetings were held with the heads of each of the different units of the UB. Since then, communication has flowed smoothly and we have taken joint action to propose any necessary adjustments to the UB Committee for Social Responsibility, such as the inclusion of additional indicators, in order to improve each new report.
