Recognition to Industrial PhD

Alemar E. Padilla Barreto, Ph D candidate and her co-supervisors Catalina Bolancé and Montserrat Guillen received the award certificate for their contribution to develop an Industrial PhD in the insurance sector. The thesis is entitled “Quantification of the insured’s overall risk to improve pricing”.

The work is one of the 65 R&D projects corresponding to the call for industrial doctorates of 2015. The event was held at the Petit Palau of the Palau de la Música Catalana de Barcelona under the chairmanship of the Catalan counsellor of Enterprise and Knowledge of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Mr. Albert Sangrà, director of the Industrial Doctorate Plan, and the Secretary of Universities and Research, Francesc Xavier Grau. They all highlighted the involvement of universities, research centres, doctoral students and companies in this plan and thanked the involvement of doctoral students as well as the thesis supervisors and those responsible for supervising the research projects in the companies. In our case, Mr. Jordi Margarit, from Zurich Insurance, was also invited to participate.

The counsellor mentioned that «the Industrial Doctorate Plan has been validated as an excellent working action for the transfer of knowledge, because the university and the research world know that a good idea implies progress in society, institutions and people. The world of business and entrepreneurs have welcomed the Industrial PhD program very well, with involvement, as well as universities, research groups and researchers in training”.

The Industrial Doctoral Plan was launched in 2012 with a pilot program. It promotes research, development and innovation projects in which Catalan universities, both public and private, collaborate, and the research centres, together with companies and institutions of all sizes, mostly SMEs, but also start-ups and non-profit organizations.
