The GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne (Groupe d’Analyse et de Théorie Economique) is a CNRS research centre in economics. Created in 2010 from the merging of two well-known French CNRS research centres, the CREUSET and the GATE. With 100 researchers, including PhD students, the group covers many of the economic research fields, with a methodological specialisation in experimental economics, game theory and applied econometrics.
One of the main research expertise areas of the group deals with space and innovation. Most of the researchers involved in the SEARCH project participate to this research programme. The aim is to contribute to the enhancement of economic geography models by integrating new problems representing the realities of contemporary economic geography in the European environment in particular (knowledge economy and research development in Europe, location/relocation, tax competition, role of public policies, etc.). Together with theoretical models, it develops works in applied econometrics. Empirical data-specific methods of disproving are used and appropriate spatial econometrics methods are developed.
A second research area will participate in the SEARCH project. Interested in game theory with applications to the formation of networks, this research programme puts the emphasis on the understanding of how such networks form and evolve over time. This framework has an incentive by itself, but it is also used in industrial organization applications to capture R&D or competitive intelligence activities. It has recently been applied to the analysis of spatial collaborative R&D networks within the EU.

The Group will bring to the consortium its specific expertise in three main fields:

  • economic geography and public policy
  • network formation
  • spatial econometrics

The GATE Lyon Saint-Etienne has published its recent work in these fields in: Applied Economics, Economic Theory, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Education Economics, European Planning Studies, Games and Economic Behavior, International Journal of Game Theory, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Economic Integration, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Journal of Public Economic Theory, Journal of Regional Science, Mathematical Social Sciences, Papers in Regional Science, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Research Policy, Recherches Economiques de Louvain, Review of Social Economy, Small Business Economics, Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics & Econometrics.
