Advanced Course on Formulation
of Colloidal Systems
6-8
June 2002, Barcelona, Spain
Course description
This Course, scheduled to take place just prior to the 14th International
Surfactants in Solution Symposium (Barcelona, June 9-14, 2002), is considered
as a pre-Symposium activity.
Formulations are used in a wide variety of industries as manufactured products
(detergents, cosmetics, paints, insecticides, inks, etc.) and as processing
aids (scouring aids in textile processing, defoamers in the paper production,
metal working lubricants in the engineering, etc.) All formulations are composed
of mixtures of chemicals, surfactants being key ingredients in the most of
them. Empirical formulation techniques, still widely used in industry, can
be substituted by a more rational approach based on the physicochemical principles
of colloidal systems. A detailed knowledge and the use of fundamental principles
should lead to successful formulations.
The main objectives of the Course are to provide approaches to different formulations
and to illustrate the effect of using mixtures of chemicals to solve practical
problems. A systematic approach to formulation will enable the participants
to understand the relationship between surfactant structure and the effects
on formulation, help them in choosing the right components as well as identifying
the requirements and the basic functions.
This Advanced Course is designed to be of interest to research chemists and
engineers working in the manufacturing industry and to users of formulations
in the fields of specialty chemicals, detergents, plastics and related areas.
