Research topics:

Thematically, my interests lie in ethical and political theory, and historically, in Plato and Aristotle. My current research focuses on Aristotelian virtue theory. I am interested in responding to the 'Situationist' critique of virtue ethics, as well as mounting a critique of Rawlsian so-called 'liberal virtues'. At the moment I am preparing papers on Aristotle and contemporary 'happiness research', and on the differences between ancient and modern conceptions of social conflict.

Monographs

Technē in Aristotle’s Ethics: Crafting the Moral Life, Continuum Press 2010 (in ‘Continuum Studies in Ancient Philosophy’), pp. viii + 176

“By identifying the extent to which Aristotle’s thinking about ethics was shaped by notions drawn from the crafts Angier has thrown new light on a surprising number of topics and has deepened our understanding of tensions within Aristotle’s thought. It is by now a rare achievement to have said something new, true and important about Aristotle” (Alasdair MacIntyre, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame, USA)

Either Kierkegaard / Or Nietzsche: Moral Philosophy in a New Key, Ashgate Press 2006 (in ‘Intersections between Continental and Analytic Philosophy’ series), pp. xi + 159

“this book is eloquently written and the scope of its argument ambitious and impressive. It will be of interest to … any reader looking for a novel consideration in contemporary moral philosophy” (Jamie Turnbull in Philosophy in Review 27 (2), 2007)
