The QS World Universities Ranking is the only major international ranking to consider data on specific subjects, where other rankings focus on broader scientific areas or use data derived only from scientific output. QS bases its ratings on three main concepts: the academic reputation of the institution; the reputation of the institution among employers; and citations by faculty, which takes into account data from Scopus, the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. The ISI ranking is put together by researchers from the Evaluation of Science and Scientific Communication research group (University of Granada andUniversity of Navarra) and the Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems research group (University of Granada). The ranking is compiled using six bibliometric indicators of scientific output and impact and based mainly on data from the Thomson-Reuters [formerly ISI] Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. The indicators are combined to form two parameters that reflect the quantitative (volume) and qualitative (impact) value of the institutions listed. These two parameters are the basis of the IFQ2A-Index (Institutional Field Qualitative-Quantitative Analysis Index), which is used to score universities for each of the 12 fields and 19 disciplines covered by the ranking.
The University of Barcelona is ranked fifth for economics and business for the period 2001-2011 and holds the same position for the five-year period 2006-2010.
