UB ECONOMICS is promoting research and academic activities in Economics in an outstanding environment.  According to the rankings, the University of Barcelona is one of the leading universities in Europe and is located in one of the best cities to study.

The University of Barcelona is the best Spanish university according the QS World University Rankings 2016-2017. It is also the only higher education institution in Spain standing out among the top 200 centers worldwide. The university holds the 160th position, after having climbed six positions during the last year. The jump is even more significant compared to 2012, as it has progressed up a total of 27 positions. When broken down by subject area, the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona stands out as the 3rd best School to study Accounting and Finance in Spain and the 4th best to study Economics and Econometrics. In both cases, the Faculty ranks among the world’s top 150 schools. The QS World University Rankings assess academic reputation (40%), scientific citations per faculty (20%), student-to-faculty ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%), international faculty ratio (5%) and student ratio (5%).

The University of Barcelona is considered one of the best 200 universities in the world and the top university in Spain, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2016, also known as the Shanghai Ranking. The institution is located between positions 151 and 200. In total, ARWU ranks more than 1,200 universities but only the best 500 are published. Higher Education institutions are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

The British journal The Times Higher Education (THE) places the University of Barcelona among the top 250 world universities. Catalan universities are the ones holding best positions in Spain, with the University of Barcelona holding the third place. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017 list the 980 top universities in the world, making the University of Barcelona a top 25% world university. The ranking uses 13 calibrated performance indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons. The University of Barcelona stands out for citation indicators, a field with which holds the 169th position with a score of 81.3, whereas the international average is 48.3.

The University of Barcelona stands out as the leading university in Spain, according to the international ranking Best Global Universities (BGU) for 2017. The university holds the 86th position worldwide and gains four positions compared to the last edition. In Europe, it holds the 24th and gains two places compared to 2015. Regarding areas of knowledge, the university is one of the top 100 institutions in Social Sciences (74th). The latest edition of the ranking is based on a set of indicators such as global research reputation, regional reputation, scientific publications, total citations, conferences and international collaborations, among other bibliometric indicators.

The University of Barcelona has consolidated its ranking as a top world university in the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU) for 2016. The university holds the 69th position in the world and it is the leading institution in Spain. Regarding Europe it is listed on the 18th position. The university keeps improving positions every year. In 2016, it gained seven places compared to the previous year and 46 compared to 2012. The NTU Ranking is a continuation of the work carried out by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT) and is one of the first international rankings that opted for calculating positions out of a series of indicators obtained only from indexed scientific performance.

The University of Barcelona is ranked 10th in Europe and 1st in Spain in the 2016-2017 University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP). At the same time, it has been the only Spanish university to have been awarded the maximum international category (A++).  The University rises to 45th in the world after having climbed 38 places over the last six years. URAP’s ranking of Top 2000 world universities is based on academic performance indicators. Therefore, publications constitute the basis of the ranking methodology. Both quality and quantity of publications and international research collaboration performance are used as indicators.

The University of Barcelona leads the Spanish university system and it is the only Spanish university among the 200 best higher education institutions worldwide. According to the 2016 edition of the university ranking by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the university holds the 122nd position in the world. The CWUR World University Rankings is the only worldwide list that analyses education quality, prestige of the centres and research quality without depending on surveys and information coming only from the universities. It lists more than a thousand centers from around the world, among the 25.000 existing universities.

The 2016 CWTS Leiden Ranking places the University of Barcelona 36th in Europe and 1st in Spain. The ranking provides statistics on the scientific impact of universities and on universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration, based exclusively on bibliographic data from the Web of Science database produced by Thomson Reuters. The University of Barcelona has consistently featured amongst the world’s top 150 institutions over the years, a remarkable accomplishment that no other Spanish higher education centre has yet achieved. In 2016, the university has been ranked 127th in the world. The institution has also strengthened its performance in the ranking by subject. As for Social Sciences, it is up to 51st in Europe and 2nd in Spain. Globally, it is 161th out of 842 institutions, which have been selected based on their number of Web of Science indexed publications in the period 2011–2014.

The Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona has established itself as a top economic institution in the Tilburg University Ranking. In 2016, it was ranked 270th in the world and 122nd in Europe, making it the 6th highest-ranked School of Economics in Spain. The Tilburg University Ranking provides a standard ranking of economics schools based on publications in a subset of the journals in the database, for the last five-year time period. The source of the information used in this ranking is the ISI Web of Knowledge. Specifically, a list of 70 leading journals in the fields of Econometrics, Economics and Finance has been identified.

The bibliographic database IDEAS has ranked the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona as the 85th best economics department in Europe and 6th in Spain. The ranking also places the School as the 110th in the world, making it a top 15% economics department. The Faculty of Economics and Business also ranks among the world’s top 50 institutions for four fields of Economics. Our institution ranks as high as 13th in the world for Economic Geography. In this field, our Faculty ranks 3rd in Europe and 1st in Spain. For Transport Economics, the University of Barcelona has been placed 18th in the world. This puts our Faculty in the 9th position in Europe and 1st in Spain. The Faculty of Economics and Business is rated 27th and 46th in the world for Urban & Real Estate Economics and Positive Political Economics, respectively. The University of Barcelona is also on its road towards a fifth top 50 field of Economics, as Public Economics ranks 52nd in the world. This analysis is based on data gathered with the Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) project, in which publishers self-index their publications and authors create online profiles from the works indexed in RePEc. Citation analysis is performed by the CitEc project, abstract views and paper downloads are counted by the LogEc project, and the various rankings are then established.Rankings are typically updated every month.
